You will not want to miss taking this journey into a futuristic sustainability world. This is a chance to learn from a successful business owner and entrepreneur, John Martinson, who has developed an understanding of the value of sustainable business practices. John Martinson is co-founder of Scottsdale-based China Mist Iced Tea Company, which he and his business partner Dan Schweiker, started in 1982 and sold in October, 2016, to Farmer Brothers Coffee Company. There he began his hands-on journey of implementing sustainable practices into a growing business.

A graduate of ASU’s 2016 Executive Master of Sustainability Leadership cohort, Martinson is now Founder and Change Agent of BE THE TEA, LLC, a new venture he started with Tara Briscoe and Nichole Herche, two colleagues from the EMSL program. BE THE TEA is an effort to develop a profoundly sustainable, radically transparent craft beverage company and bottling plant incorporating cutting edge sustainability practices in the development of products addressing the water, energy and food security nexus. BE THE TEA is organizing as a Certified B-Corp and is currently housed at ASU SkySong in Scottsdale.

“This exciting venture is a bit like building a colony on Mars”, John says. John is passionate about merging business and sustainable practices. This venture includes the creation of an Innovation Center, working with ASU students and staff. He sees that the best sustainable practices begin with heart; are propelled into success by seeing opportunities where others see obstacles; is inspired by collaboration and creativity; fueled by business savvy and entrepreneurial talent; and has a true commitment to creating a better world through business. One of the goals is to meet the Living Products Challenge. You will be invigorated with inspiring thoughts and visionary practices for doing business better!
