Join us for our September 12 Lunch and Learn to hear about the City of Phoenix Green Business Leader Program and how you and your business can connect with the Reimagine Zero Waste program initiatives from Lucas Mariacher, the Zero Waste Coordinator for the City of Phoenix. The Green Business Leader Program recognizes and promotes businesses that volunteer to operate in a more environmentally responsible manner through sustainable actions. Businesses receive many benefits to be a part of the program and you will learn how your business may be able to apply to benefit from this program! This program started through the Reimagine Phoenix initiative, which is the city's public goal to increase its waste diversion rate to 40 percent by 2020. The program also assists the city in reaching its eight overarching 2050 Environmental Sustainability goals.

The City of Phoenix produces 1 million tons of trash every year. Realizing the opportunity to divert this waste from the landfill, the Phoenix Mayor and City Council announced the Reimagine Phoenix Initiative in 2013 with the city’s public goal to divert 40% of its waste from the landfill by year 2020. Lucas will share the current steps being taken by the city to meet its diversion goals and how residents and businesses can play an active role in Phoenix’s recycling programs to help achieve that goal.

Topics covered:

  • - Reimagine Phoenix Initiative and events leading up to it’s inception
  • - Waste and recycling challenges and opportunities
  • - How Green Business was created out of Reimagine Phoenix
  • - How a business can join the program
  • - Benefits a business will receive
  • - What our certified businesses have gotten out of the program
  • - 2018 Green Business program expansion
  • - Future goals with the program
